JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A months-long investigation by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office SCRAP Team has led to the arrest of nine suspects and the takedown of a theft ring responsible for stealing fiber optic cables across Jacksonville and Bradford County.
The investigation, which began in October, identified Archie Crook as the ringleader of the operation. The group allegedly posed as utility workers to access and steal fiber optic cables, which were then stripped for their copper content.
Initial arrests included Steven Midyette, Van Arnold, Darrick Rhoden, Terry Thompson, and Donald Tyre. As the investigation expanded, aided by surveillance footage, witness interviews, recycling center records, and advanced investigative techniques, four more individuals were identified and arrested: Archie Crook, Corttney Kowalski, James Bennett, and Leslie Bennett — the last of whom were caught in the act during an attempted theft.
Authorities seized stolen copper, specialized tools used in the thefts, and illegal drugs during the operation.
The JSO emphasized the broader impact of the crimes, noting that the theft of fiber optic cables disrupts internet access for residents and results in significant replacement costs borne by utility customers.
The JSO extended its thanks to the Bradford County Sheriff’s Office and Attorney General Henry Uthmeier’s Office of Statewide Prosecution for their crucial assistance in the operation.
