In a successful operation, the Women Police Station (WPS) in Itanagar arrested Apesh Majhi, a resident of Naya Ghagra village in Assam’s Sonitpur district, on charges of criminal trespass, molestation, and theft.
The incident that led to his arrest occurred in the early hours of April 27, when a 20-year-old woman from Chandranagar’s Power House area woke up to find an unknown man attempting to disrobe her while she was asleep in a shared room. Her loud screams prompted the intruder to flee the scene, though she later realized that her mobile phone was missing.
The victim formally filed a complaint on May 1, prompting police to register a case under Sections 333, 307, 75, 76, and 34 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. Inspector Nich Rupa of WPS Itanagar spearheaded the investigation, utilizing technical surveillance and actionable intelligence to track the suspect’s location back to his home state.
In collaboration with the Gohpur Police, the WPS team carried out a raid in Assam, arresting Majhi on the evening of May 2. A search of his seized mobile phone revealed digital evidence, including photos and videos linked to the victim, which strengthened the case against him.
Authorities commended the WPS team’s swift response, cross-state coordination, and thorough investigation. The Capital Police reiterated their commitment to upholding the safety and security of citizens, particularly women, and warned that such offenses will result in severe legal consequences.
