A housemaid and her accomplice were arrested for allegedly stealing Rs 45 lakh in cash from a wholesale grocery trader’s home in Borivali, police said on Tuesday.

The accused have been identified as Anuradha Randive (36) and Ashfaq Islam Khan (28). According to police, the duo was nabbed within hours of a complaint filed by the trader, Varun Vasani. Investigators have so far recovered Rs 17 lakh from the stolen amount.

Vasani had recently employed Anuradha through a private agency, but she disappeared without notice just a few days into the job. Unable to reach her, Vasani’s wife filed a missing person report at the Borivali police station.

Two days later, Vasani discovered that Rs 45 lakh in cash, stored in a cupboard, had gone missing. When the family checked the CCTV footage from their building, Anuradha was seen leaving with a bag matching the missing one.

Using the footage and technical tracking, police quickly traced and arrested both Anuradha and Ashfaq. During interrogation, Anuradha reportedly admitted to the crime. Police continue to search for the remaining money and are further investigating the matter.
