An assistant accountant at Babu Banarasi Das University (BBDU), Anupam Shukla, was arrested on Friday for allegedly embezzling student semester fees by issuing fake RTGS receipts instead of depositing the money into the university’s account.
According to DCP Crime Kamlesh Dixit, the 25-year-old accused, a resident of Bharatipuram Colony in Tiwariganj, was arrested near the Juggar railway bridge. The scam came to light after a student, Aman Singh, lodged a written complaint with the BBD police station stating that he paid Rs 60,000 in cash to Shukla on May 21, 2025, as his semester fee.
Instead of giving a valid university cash receipt, Shukla allegedly handed over a forged RTGS/NEFT receipt. The fraud was exposed when the university informed Singh that his fee remained unpaid.
University spokesperson Kamil Rizvi stated that an internal committee had been formed to audit technical records. “We fear that over 80 students may have been duped by the accused,” he added.
The investigation is ongoing, and further victims are being identified.
