The Dover Police Department arrested 36-year-old Antonio Powell of Dover following a sexual assault and strangulation incident on Tuesday afternoon. The investigation began around 2:34 p.m. when officers responded to a reported sexual assault at a residence within Dover city limits.
Upon arrival, police spoke with the victim, who identified Powell as the suspect. It was revealed that Powell was known to the victim and had been at her residence. During the encounter, Powell allegedly strangled and sexually assaulted the victim. To protect the victim’s privacy, the exact location of the incident is not being disclosed.
A warrant was quickly obtained, and at 3:33 p.m., Powell was arrested without incident near the intersection of West Reed Street and South Governors Avenue by a Dover Police Motor Unit officer.
Powell was taken to the Dover Police Department, processed, and arraigned. He was subsequently committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution (SCI) on $110,000 cash bail, facing charges of first-degree rape and strangulation.
Powell is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
