HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. – A 19-year-old man has been charged with second-degree murder following a fatal shooting in Lutz on August 17, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

The suspect, Anthony Williams, was initially detained at the scene in the 1000 block of Helena Street after an argument with 34-year-old Joshua Benjamin escalated into a physical altercation and gunfire. Benjamin was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Following the incident, Williams was first charged with Carrying a Concealed Firearm and Armed Trespassing. However, after a detailed investigation and consultation with the State Attorney’s Office, his charges were upgraded to include second-degree murder with a firearm on September 4.

Sheriff Chad Chronister praised his investigative team, stating:

“This suspect not only took an innocent life but also left a family and community grieving. No one should have to endure such a loss. Our detectives worked relentlessly to gather the evidence needed to ensure justice is served.”

The investigation remains ongoing.
