A traffic stop in Steuben County on Sunday evening led to the arrest of two individuals after Indiana State Police (ISP) discovered methamphetamine and a stolen handgun. The incident occurred around 6:15 p.m. on U.S. 20 near C.R. 200 W, when troopers stopped a grey Ford truck for speeding.
ISP troopers called in a K-9 unit to assist with the search, which led to the discovery of the stolen handgun and a powdery substance believed to be methamphetamine.
The driver, 35-year-old Anthony Steel from Fort Wayne, and his passenger, 20-year-old Lita Smoker from Angola, were both arrested. They were transported to the Steuben County Jail and face a range of charges.
Steel faces charges including possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, theft of a firearm, trafficking contraband into a correctional facility, possession of methamphetamine, and possession of paraphernalia. Smoker faces charges including dealing methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine, theft of a firearm, and possession of paraphernalia.
While at the jail, Steel was found to be in possession of suspected methamphetamine. All evidence has been confiscated and sent for testing.
