A 24-year-old man, Anthony Esan, has been remanded in custody after being charged with the attempted murder of a uniformed army officer. The incident occurred near Brompton Barracks in Kent when Lt Col Mark Teeton was stabbed on Tuesday afternoon.

Esan appeared at Medway Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, where he was ordered to remain in custody due to the severity of the charges. Lt Col Teeton, aged in his 40s, was attacked in Sally Port Gardens shortly before 6 PM BST and remains in serious but stable condition in the hospital.

Esan, also charged with possession of an offensive weapon, was arrested about 30 minutes after the attack near his home in Mooring Road, Rochester. During a search of his moped, police recovered several knives.

According to prosecutors, Esan was seen running up behind Lt Col Teeton before violently stabbing him repeatedly. The officer was knocked to the ground, and Esan fled the scene shortly after.

Lt Col Teeton, who oversees an engineering course for the Royal Engineers, was attacked near the 1 Royal School of Military Engineering Regiment at Brompton Barracks.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer expressed his support for the soldier and his family, wishing him a swift recovery. Esan is set to appear at Maidstone Crown Court on August 22.
