In a major breakthrough against regional drug trafficking, Anil Choudhury (38), a resident of Nathnagar village, Bhagalpur district, Bihar, was arrested with 1.454 kilograms of suspected brown sugar near the 18 Mile area under Baishnabnagar Police Station along NH-12.
The arrest was part of a joint operation led by the Special Task Force (STF) Kolkata, CMG Cell Malda, and Baishnabnagar Police, based on a tip-off from a confidential source.
Choudhury was intercepted while allegedly transporting the contraband on the Farakka-bound stretch of the highway. During the search, authorities seized the narcotics and took him into custody.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Choudhury procured the brown sugar from unidentified suppliers in Kaliachak, a known drug trafficking hub in the region. Authorities believe the consignment was intended for further distribution, and are now working to trace the broader network involved.
A case has been registered under the NDPS Act, and further interrogation of the accused is underway to identify and apprehend co-conspirators.
