BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. — On July 14, Angelo Emayi Johnson, 26, pleaded guilty to multiple drug trafficking charges related to a January 25 incident, the Buncombe County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Johnson admitted guilt to two counts of trafficking opium/heroin (Class E) and possession with intent to sell or deliver a Schedule II controlled substance.

He was sentenced to a mandatory minimum of 90 months and a maximum of 120 months in prison — equivalent to 7.5 to 10 years — and must pay a $750,000 fine, according to the DA’s office.

The charges stem from a January 25 traffic stop by Asheville Police. Johnson, who was the front passenger, was found with a white powdery substance on the passenger seat and inside a McDonald’s cup in the car’s center console.

When asked to exit the vehicle, Johnson attempted to flee but was captured shortly after.

A bag containing 17 grams of fentanyl was recovered near Johnson, and the substance in the cup also tested positive for fentanyl, the DA’s office confirmed.
