Angela Lloyd, 58, has been sentenced to two years in prison for running a secret benefits scam totaling nearly £270,000 over more than a decade. Lloyd, along with her husband Lee Phillips, 54, was caught after a police raid on their home in Liverpool.
Using a deceased woman’s identity and multiple false medical claims—including fake conditions for her son—Lloyd fraudulently claimed housing benefits, carer’s allowance, and personal independence payments (PIP) she was not entitled to. Over 11 and a half years, she unlawfully received £169,394.15.
Phillips also joined the fraud, falsely claiming he required multiple daily carers and unlawfully receiving around £100,980 since 2018 through various benefits including PIP and housing support.
Neighbors grew suspicious as they observed Phillips pretending to hobble with a walking stick to meet carers, only to be seen washing his BMW, driving, and even performing as a DJ at community events. One neighbor said, “He made a real show of not being able to walk whenever his carers were here, but then I saw him walking fine washing his car.”
Phillips was sentenced to 20 months in jail after pleading guilty to fraud by false representation and failing to disclose information.
Judge Simon Medland KC highlighted the severity of their long-term fraud, stating that defrauding public benefits undermines crucial support meant for those in genuine need.
