TAMPA — Two drivers, Angel Hurrea, 19, and Devin Harrison, 21, were arrested Sunday evening for racing on the Selmon Expressway, police said. Both were clocked driving over 100 MPH in a 55 MPH zone.
According to the Tampa Police Department, the reckless race began as a TPD officer was entering the westbound lanes of the expressway from Willow Street. A 2021 Honda Accord and a 2019 Dodge Challenger sped past the officer at high speeds.
The drivers continued weaving dangerously through traffic, showing no regard for other motorists. Police revealed that the suspects intentionally recorded the race to post on social media.
Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw condemned the behavior, saying, “Let this be a warning to those who have a blatant disregard for the safety of others by speeding on roadways. You will be held accountable, and your vehicle will be impounded. No matter the time of night, everyone in Tampa has the right to feel safe on our roads. I’m incredibly proud of the officers whose actions helped ensure that safety.”
Hurrea and Harrison were eventually stopped, arrested, and face charges related to reckless driving and street racing.
