MODESTO, Calif. (FOX40) — A retail theft investigation in Northern California led police to arrest a suspect wanted for a double murder in Salinas.
Around 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 26, Modesto Police Department’s Property Crimes Unit was conducting an organized retail theft operation with local retailers when Target’s loss prevention officers at the 3900 Sisk Road store reported two men stealing merchandise.
According to police, the suspects — later identified as Angel Cabrera, 18, and Christian DiazSilva, 19, both from Salinas — were seen concealing items and leaving the store without paying before getting into a parked vehicle.
Both men were detained by officers, and the stolen merchandise was recovered and returned to Target. During the investigation, detectives discovered that Cabrera was wanted in connection with a double homicide that occurred in Salinas on Sept. 19.
The Salinas Police Department was notified and took custody of Cabrera, while DiazSilva was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on theft-related charges.
“This arrest is just one example of the violent criminals who commit these types of offenses,” said MPD Sgt. Mike Hicks, who oversees the property crimes unit. “We are dedicated to keeping our community safe — not in Modesto.”
