Andre Coronado-Vigil Gets 10 Years for Human Smuggling

Houston man sentenced after Frio County traffic stop

by Sophia Bennett

Frio County, TX — A Houston man, Andre Albert Coronado-Vigil, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for his role in a human smuggling case that began with a routine traffic stop in April 2024.

The 31-year-old pleaded guilty on August 5, 2025, and left sentencing to the court’s discretion. On September 10, the court handed down a decade-long prison term.

🔹 Smuggling Uncovered in Traffic Stop

The case stemmed from an April 19, 2024 incident when a Frio County Sheriff’s deputy stopped Coronado-Vigil for speeding at 81 mph in a 70 mph zone near Pearsall. After the vehicle pulled over, multiple passengers fled into nearby brush, and one was found hiding inside the SUV.

Coronado-Vigil was arrested at the scene. Investigators later confirmed the passengers were undocumented migrants, part of a smuggling operation.

🔹 Criminal History and Controversial Statement

During sentencing, the court reviewed Coronado-Vigil’s criminal record, which includes a pending charge of Sexual Assault of a Child in Harris County.

Prosecutors also highlighted Coronado-Vigil’s attitude, quoting a statement he made during the investigation:

“This is not illegal in Houston. This is just a border scam.”

The remark was viewed as an attempt to downplay the severity of his actions.

🔹 Prosecution Commends Law Enforcement

Kenny Lam, prosecutor for the Border Prosecution Unit, led the case and praised the Frio County Sheriff’s Office for their work in combating human smuggling operations.

“The cooperation between agencies is critical in holding smugglers accountable,” Lam said.
