Asheville, N.C. (WLOS) — Amy Elizabeth Curry, 48, a Waynesville woman, was sentenced to nearly six years in prison for embezzling at least $1.5 million from a senior assisted living facility in Canton, North Carolina.

In a ruling by the U.S. District Court for the Western District of North Carolina in Asheville, Curry received a sentence of 70 months (5 years, 10 months) in federal prison. She will also serve three years of supervised release after her incarceration. In addition to her prison sentence, Curry was ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $1.46 million to Silver Bluff, the senior living facility she embezzled from.

As part of her role as office manager and bookkeeper at Silver Bluff, Curry had access to the facility’s bank accounts and accounting records. Between December 2022 and April 2023, she transferred over $1.5 million from these accounts to those controlled by her and her then-boyfriend, J.C. To conceal the theft, Curry deleted records of the transactions and altered account settings to prevent the facility’s employees from noticing.

Curry also falsely noted the transfers as payroll expenses on the facility’s bank statements. She used the stolen funds to cover personal expenses, including purchasing a pickup truck and gambling at casinos, spending more than $700,000 of the embezzled money.

On December 11, 2023, Curry pleaded guilty to wire fraud. Her sentencing was announced by U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson, with assistance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Haywood County Sheriff’s Office.

Upon designation, Curry will report to the Federal Bureau of Prisons to begin serving her sentence.
