CARTHAGE, N.C. — A Carthage woman has been arrested on a felony drug charge following an investigation that began with a reported larceny at the Aberdeen Walmart, according to the Aberdeen Police Department.
Police said officers responded Aug. 24 to Walmart after receiving a report of a larceny in progress. Officers located the suspect’s vehicle and conducted a traffic stop, identifying Amber Smith, 31, as the driver. Stolen merchandise was reportedly visible inside the vehicle, and all occupants were detained while authorities continued their investigation, including reviewing surveillance video and obtaining statements.
During a search of the vehicle, officers discovered a bag in the glove box containing a crystal-like substance belonging to Smith. The substance was submitted to the North Carolina State Crime Laboratory, which confirmed on Oct. 9 that it was methamphetamine.
A warrant charging Smith with felony possession of methamphetamine was obtained Nov. 19. She was taken into custody by the Moore County Sheriff’s Office on Dec. 24 and brought before a magistrate, who set a $10,000 secured bond.
All charges are allegations, and Smith is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
