Amber Back Arrested in OxyContin Lego Smuggling

Drugs from Poland found in hidden Lego pieces

by Sophia Bennett

A Kentucky woman was arrested after federal agents intercepted a package from Poland containing OxyContin pills concealed inside Lego pieces, authorities said.

Amber Back, 41, was taken into custody after the Department of Homeland Security contacted local police on Feb. 5 following the seizure at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport. Court records indicate the package, addressed to Back, contained 100 OxyContin pills and was destined for her home in Mount Sterling.

Police delivered the package to Back’s residence on Feb. 6 before detaining her for questioning. During the interview, Back claimed another woman had arranged for the shipment and denied involvement. However, investigators gained access to her phone after she provided the passcode and discovered messages discussing the sale of pills, including references to selling “blue pills.”

Authorities also said similar packages had been delivered to her address over the past year.

Back is charged with first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance. She was released from the Montgomery County Detention Center on a $5,000 bond and is scheduled for arraignment on Feb. 26.

Police noted that the investigation is ongoing and additional arrests are possible.
