In a major crackdown on narcotics trafficking, Patiala Police, in coordination with Counter Intelligence, arrested three men linked to an international drug syndicate, recovering 15.680 kg of opium and Rs2.30 lakh in drug money.
During a media briefing, SSP Varun Sharma revealed that a police naka was set up in Sangrur under the supervision of SP (Investigation) Gurbans Singh Bains. Officers from Ghagga police station intercepted a suspicious car. The three occupants — Amarjit Singh, Harmanjit Singh, and Harpreet Singh, all residents of Sunam in Sangrur — were asked to exit the vehicle.
A thorough search led to the recovery of nearly 16 kg of opium hidden inside the car, along with Rs2.30 lakh in suspected drug proceeds.
According to SSP Sharma, the preliminary investigation indicates the opium was smuggled from Imphal and Assam, part of a larger trafficking route from the Northeast to Punjab. The accused are believed to be part of an international narcotics network.
Authorities are continuing the investigation to trace the full network and potential international links. The three accused have been booked under the NDPS Act.
