JOHNSTON COUNTY, N.C. — Authorities have arrested a Durham man in connection with a string of mailbox check thefts and forgery cases reported in western Johnston County. Investigators say approximately 10 victims reported checks stolen from their mailboxes over several months last year.
Detectives with the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office identified Amahd Marquie Alston, 24, of Finsbury Street in Durham, as a suspect in the crimes, which allegedly began in June 2025. According to investigators, the stolen checks were later forged and cashed at various locations.
Law enforcement officials reviewed surveillance footage from businesses and ATM locations, which ultimately helped link Alston to the fraudulent transactions.
Alston was arrested on January 16 and charged with felony obtaining property by false pretenses and uttering a forged instrument.
Investigators say the case remains active, and additional charges may be filed as more victims and transactions are reviewed.
