EDMONTON — A group of alleged thieves who used distraction tactics to rob unsuspecting Edmontonians have been arrested following a multi-agency investigation.
Edmonton police, in collaboration with RCMP and the Canadian Border Services Agency, arrested Alexandra Calin, Florentina Calin, and Maricica Grecu in connection with a string of distraction-style thefts and retail property crimes that have plagued the city since May 2025.
The investigation began after a series of incidents where victims — often approached in parking lots, residential driveways, or roadside — were complimented or physically touched by friendly strangers who would then discreetly steal jewelry or valuables. Police have linked at least 48 reported cases to this style of theft.
On August 12, officers executed a search warrant in Strathcona County, resulting in the recovery of:
A 2009 Mercedes ML350 allegedly used in the thefts
Multiple pieces of gold and imitation gold jewelry
Over $45,000 in cash believed to be proceeds of crime
The three individuals arrested are now facing charges of theft under $5,000, and warrants have been issued for three additional suspects. Investigators believe more people may be involved in this organized scheme.
“The people involved in this organized crime have exploited the trust of Edmontonians and caused significant emotional turmoil for some of their victims,” said Edmonton police in a statement.
Authorities are urging anyone who may have experienced similar encounters to contact Edmonton police.
