JASPER COUNTY, Texas — A man and woman were arrested Tuesday evening after allegedly trespassing onto private land and stealing an ATV in an attempt to free their stuck vehicle.

According to the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department, the incident occurred off County Road 250, about three miles north of Jasper. Authorities said 41-year-old Alexander Thornton, described by officials as a “habitual thief”, and 45-year-old Jessica Anne Lewis drove into a private hunting club property. After their car became stuck in mud, the pair allegedly stole an ATV from a nearby residence and tried to use it to tow their car out.

Deputies later arrested both suspects and transported them to the Jasper County Jail. Thornton was charged with Criminal Trespassing and Theft of Property, with the theft charge enhanced due to two or more prior convictions. He is currently on parole following a recent theft conviction.

Jessica Lewis was also charged with Criminal Trespassing, and during intake at the jail, deputies discovered three syringes hidden in her underwear.

Both suspects remain in custody as the investigation continues.
