SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A Sacramento County man has been sentenced to 25 years to life in state prison for the death of his infant son, authorities announced.
Alexander Coffey was sentenced on Dec. 19 following a jury conviction for second-degree murder and assault on a child causing death, according to the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office.
The case stems from the death of Coffey’s 7-month-old son, Greyson, on Nov. 11, 2023. Prosecutors said Coffey was home alone with the infant when the child woke up in the early morning hours.
According to court records, Coffey later admitted to law enforcement that he violently shook the infant. The child suffered catastrophic injuries to his brain and spine. Prosecutors said the injuries were among the most severe typically seen outside of major vehicle collisions.
The sentencing brings the criminal case to a close following the jury’s guilty verdict.
