Escambia County, Fla. — A Pensacola man is facing a homicide charge following a shooting last weekend that left one man dead, according to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities arrested 44-year-old Alex Hines early Friday morning. He is charged with negligent manslaughter and a weapons offense and is currently being held in the Escambia County Jail without bond.
Deputies were dispatched Saturday around 6:30 p.m. to reports of an armed disturbance near Briese Lane and Jeffery Lane. When deputies arrived, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound to the cheek. The victim was transported to a hospital, where officials say he later died due to complications.
Investigators learned that before deputies arrived, a caller had contacted the Florida Highway Patrol to report a truck ramming a camper trailer. The caller described the driver as intoxicated, armed, and acting erratically while driving a Ford Bronco.
Deputies later located a Bronco on Jeffery Lane near the shooting scene. Sheriff Chip Simmons said investigators were able to connect Hines to the vehicle and link the vehicle to the location of the shooting.
Surveillance video placed the Bronco in the area around the time of the incident. According to investigators, footage shows the vehicle leaving Jeffery Lane at 6:06 p.m., driving southbound on Briese Lane with mounted LED lights activated at 6:20 p.m., and appearing on the victim’s security camera at 6:29 p.m.—just 37 seconds before the 911 call was made.
Witnesses also reported hearing a gunshot and seeing a truck with extremely bright white lights, initially mistaking it for a law enforcement vehicle. Sheriff Simmons confirmed no deputies had arrived at the scene at that time.
Authorities say the timeline established through surveillance footage and witness statements ultimately led to Hines’ arrest. Investigators say the case remains active as they continue preparing for prosecution.
