Alejandro Diaz Charged in $60K Elder Theft Case

Contractor accused of exploiting elderly homeowner

by Sophia Bennett

In a troubling case of elder exploitation, Alejandro Diaz has been arrested for allegedly scamming an elderly victim out of more than $60,000. The incident has intensified concerns in Cameron County about rising crimes targeting vulnerable residents. Local authorities are urging the public to stay alert and report suspicious behavior to help prevent similar offenses.

The victim, an elderly homeowner, hired Diaz to repair her sewage system. Over several months, he repeatedly delayed the work, offering various excuses while gaining the victim’s trust. Unbeknownst to her, Diaz had no intention of completing the repairs. Investigators say the situation underscores how easily the elderly can fall prey to fraudulent contractors.

Diaz, 38, is currently being held at the Carrisales Rucker Detention Center. The Cameron County Sheriff’s Office has charged him with theft exploitation of an elderly person—a serious offense that carries significant legal consequences. An arrest warrant was issued on November 23, leading to his detention.

The case highlights the ongoing need to protect seniors from exploitation and deception. Authorities emphasize that holding individuals like Diaz accountable is essential to maintaining community safety and trust. This incident serves as a reminder of the vital role law enforcement plays in safeguarding vulnerable residents.
