OMAHA, Neb. — Alec Cowan, 27, has been formally charged in connection with a series of package thefts and violent domestic threats. The Omaha man appeared in court on Wednesday after being arrested on Tuesday. Cowan faces 11 counts of burglary related to the package thefts, each carrying a potential 20-year prison sentence. His bond for these charges was set at $100,000.
In a separate case, Cowan was charged with one count of terroristic threats, with his bond in this case set at $200,000. Cowan waived his preliminary hearings for both cases, and they are now set to go to trial.
According to the Omaha Police Department, the package thefts allegedly committed by Cowan date back to November 2, spanning five different apartment complexes. The suspect is believed to have stolen packages from residents in the Omaha metro area.
Court documents also detail disturbing claims of threats made against Cowan’s ex-girlfriend. The woman reported receiving a series of threatening phone calls from Cowan, including one morning where he called her 20 times. After she refused to send him money, the calls escalated, and Cowan allegedly threatened to blow up her house and kill her and her unborn child. He also made threats against his own children and was accused of driving aggressively at her vehicle.
In addition to the new charges, Cowan has a criminal history. In 2022, he was arrested for assaulting a police officer, possessing over one pound of marijuana, and several other offenses. He served six months in jail for those crimes.
Omaha police suspect that Cowan was part of a larger group responsible for the recent package thefts and are continuing their investigation into potential accomplices.
Residents who have experienced similar thefts are encouraged to report them to the Omaha Police Department’s Telephone Report Unit at 402-444-4877 or file reports online.
