Police in Faridkot claimed a major success in their ongoing crackdown on drug trafficking on Wednesday after arresting a suspected high-profile smuggler and seizing 2.064 kilograms of heroin along with Rs 20,000 in suspected drug money.
According to police officials, the arrest was made during a patrol near the Chandbaja village bridge. A police team noticed a suspicious man carrying a kit bag on a service road. When the suspect saw the officers, he attempted to escape on his motorcycle but was quickly intercepted.
The search was conducted in the presence of a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), during which officers recovered two packets of heroin weighing 1.058 kg and 1.006 kg respectively. The motorcycle used by the suspect was also seized.
The accused has been identified as Akash, originally from Preet Nagar, who was currently residing in Kirpa Nagar.
Police revealed that Akash has a long criminal history, with at least seven cases registered under the NDPS Act along with other criminal charges.
Pragya Jain, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), said preliminary interrogation suggests the seized narcotics were intended for further distribution, pointing to the suspect’s possible links with a larger organised drug trafficking network.
Police said further investigation is underway to trace the source of the heroin supply and identify other members of the drug syndicate.
