The North Cyber Police have arrested a 32-year-old man, Ajay Morya, from Thane’s Wagle Estate for assisting cyber fraudsters by letting them use his bank account to stash money defrauded from victims across India.
The arrest followed a complaint from a Mumbai resident who lost Rs1.78 crore in an online share trading scam. The victim was lured by promises of high returns and joined a WhatsApp group, where he received seemingly legitimate investment tips. A fake trading website was used to show growing earnings, and the man was then made to transfer funds to multiple accounts in order to “withdraw” his supposed profits.
Investigators found that Rs35 lakh of the scammed amount was funneled into Morya’s bank account. Cyber police traced Morya through the banking details he submitted while opening the account. His arrest was carried out at Thane’s Viviana Mall under the supervision of DCP Purushottam Karad.
According to senior inspector Sudhakar Humbe, Morya’s bank account has been linked to at least 30 other cyber fraud cases registered nationwide. Authorities are now working to identify and locate the key figures behind the fraud network.
