Ahmedabad police arrested two men on February 19 for stealing jewellery from multiple women across Thane and Mumbai, officials confirmed on Sunday.
The investigation began after a 60-year-old woman reported jewellery theft near Bhayander railway station on February 4. The accused reportedly engaged the woman in conversation and stole jewellery valued at Rs 80,000 by diverting her attention, said Senior Police Inspector Aviraj Kurhade.
Following CCTV footage and intelligence reports, police traced the suspects to Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The men, aged 23 and 45, were apprehended from the Sardar Nagar area with the assistance of Gujarat police.
During interrogation, the accused confessed to involvement in 10 other similar thefts across Thane and Mumbai. Authorities are currently working to recover the stolen items.
Separately, the Customs Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) arrested 24-year-old Inaamul Hassan from Karnataka for smuggling gold worth Rs 2.1 crore. Hassan was caught carrying 13 gold pouches hidden in an aircraft lavatory on a flight from Male to Mumbai. The arrest took place after AIU received an intelligence tip and conducted a thorough search upon arrival.
