The Rural police have arrested 23-year-old cybercriminal Aftab Mohammad from Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, for defrauding a 74-year-old retired teacher, Dilip Janrao, from Yeola in Nashik district.

Janrao was cheated out of Rs 33.3 lakh between March and June this year by online fraudsters promising bonuses and commissions on his matured insurance policy. The victim transferred large sums to various bank accounts before realizing the scam.

Under the guidance of SP Balasaheb Patil, Nashik Rural cyber police froze two bank accounts containing Rs 6 lakh linked to the retired teacher. Aftab Mohammad was subsequently arrested on Friday.

The fraud began when Janrao sought to surrender his insurance policy, initially paying Rs 99,000 as a “processing fee.” Over multiple calls from different fraudsters, he paid Rs 19 lakh, then Rs 12 lakh, and finally Rs 2.3 lakh. The accused allegedly used various identities to continue the deception.

Police stated Aftab Mohammad has revealed names of other involved individuals, and the investigation is ongoing.
