In a shocking incident, advocate Jatin Salwan was arrested in Chandigarh for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs 30 lakh to influence the outcome of a divorce case. The case came to light after a Punjab resident approached the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) with a complaint against the lawyer.
According to the complainant, Salwan assured him that he could sway the judicial officer’s decision in his cousin’s divorce matter in exchange for the hefty bribe. The CBI promptly registered a case and launched an investigation.
During the inquiry, phone conversations between the complainant and the advocate were intercepted, revealing clear evidence of the bribe demand. In one audio clip, Salwan stated, “Rishwat de paise kade ghat nahi honde,” meaning that the bribe amount would never be lowered.
Initially, Salwan demanded the entire Rs 30 lakh upfront but later agreed to accept Rs 5 lakh as the initial payment. The complainant also reported that someone acting on behalf of the judge was expected to collect the money.
This case highlights deep-rooted issues of bribery and corruption within the judicial system, raising concerns about unfair influence on court decisions and erosion of public trust in India’s justice system.
