SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A man was arrested on Christmas Eve after deputies allegedly caught him stealing copper wire from a Sacramento Regional Transit (SacRT) light rail track, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities said deputies assigned to SacRT patrols observed a suspect cutting copper wire along the tracks between the Sunrise and Hazel stations on Dec. 24. The suspect was taken into custody at the scene.
The man was identified as 32-year-old Addison Jones. Deputies said he was carrying wire cutters and approximately two pounds of stolen copper wire at the time of his arrest.
Investigators reported that several utility poles along the light rail line were damaged as a result of the alleged theft, disrupting rail infrastructure and creating potential safety concerns.
Jones was arrested and booked on multiple charges, including copper theft, damaging railroad property, vandalism, possession of burglary tools, and trespassing.
Detectives also believe Jones may be connected to other similar copper theft incidents along SacRT lines and said the investigation remains ongoing.
