LUBBOCK, Texas — Adam Canales Jr. has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the 2021 death of a two-month-old baby, following a conviction for manslaughter in a Lubbock court.

According to investigators, Canales gave the infant excessive amounts of over-the-counter medication in an attempt to make her sleep. The substances were deemed unsafe for a child of that age, and the overdose ultimately led to the baby’s death.

During the trial, prosecutors described Canales as “selfish and reckless.” The defense claimed miscommunication in the household led to multiple doses being administered and argued that Canales had no intent to harm, noting that he was given similar medications as a child.

The tragic incident occurred at a home near Idalou in July 2021. When deputies arrived, they found the baby already deceased. Autopsy results confirmed the cause of death was due to improper medication.

Canales’ wife, Sarah, is also facing a manslaughter charge in connection with the same case.

Canales faced up to 20 years and received the maximum sentence from Judge Trey McClendon in the 137th District Court.
