Suspects targeted passengers, mostly women, in taxis

ACCRA, Ghana — The Ghana Police Service has arrested five people connected to a taxi phone-snatching ring that targeted passengers, predominantly women, across Accra and surrounding communities.

According to DCOP Theodore Hlormenu, Director of Police Operations, the three principal suspects were apprehended on January 12, 2026, following intelligence-led operations. They are:

Selassie Lawrence (aka Abe), 45

Richard Osei, 36

Charles Kofi Nti (aka Survivor), 40

Two alleged receivers of the stolen phones were also arrested: John William Ampon (aka Willie), 47, and Frederick Berko, 30, a mobile phone dealer.

The suspects reportedly posed as commercial taxi drivers, primarily operating in the mornings. DCOP Hlormenu explained that two suspects sat in front while one sat in the back with the passenger. “The doors are locked so the passenger cannot get out easily. While the victim struggles, the suspect at the back takes the phone or wallet,” he said.

Investigations began after a complaint on November 17, 2025, when a woman reported that her iPhone 14 was stolen in a taxi from Madina to Adenta Aviation. Surveillance and intelligence later led authorities to a black and yellow Toyota Vitz, tracked across Kasoa, Taifa, Kwashieman, Amasaman, and nearby areas.

On January 12, 2026, the vehicle was intercepted at Awoshie, and further operations in Kwashieman, Achimota, and Dome led to the arrests of Osei and Nti, along with the recovery of a green and yellow Matiz connected to the group.

All principal suspects remain in custody, assisting police with ongoing investigations. DCOP Hlormenu urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity as authorities continue efforts to dismantle criminal networks.
