Abu Trica, the Ghanaian social media influencer whose real name is Frederick Kumi, has been arrested in Ghana following accusations by U.S. prosecutors of orchestrating a romance scam that defrauded elderly Americans of more than $8 million.
According to U.S. charging documents, the 31-year-old allegedly used AI tools to fabricate online identities, build emotional trust, and persuade victims to send money, citing medical emergencies, travel problems, and fictitious business opportunities. Kumi reportedly maintained constant communication via calls, emails, and messaging to keep victims engaged, before routing stolen funds to associates in Ghana and the United States.
Investigators allege the operation included accomplices posing as intermediaries to disguise financial transfers. Kumi faces charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering, each carrying a potential maximum sentence of 20 years if convicted.
Also known as Emmanuel Kojo Baah Obeng, Kumi amassed a large Instagram following of over 100,000, often showcasing expensive clothing and gadgets. U.S. authorities confirmed that Ghanaian officials assisted with the arrest, and extradition proceedings are now underway under laws protecting elderly Americans from financial exploitation.
This case reflects a broader pattern of West African-based online fraud targeting older victims. In recent months, other influencers and ringleaders from the region have been arrested or sentenced in similar schemes.
Authorities emphasize that while such cases harm victims, they also unfairly cast suspicion on millions of young Africans who are building legitimate digital careers. Experts argue that with stronger systems and ethical leadership, Africa’s digital economy can flourish on innovation and trust, rather than exploitation.
