In a major cybercrime crackdown, Phase-7 Cyber Police dismantled a fake call centre operating from a flat in Sector-91, Mohali. The raid led to the arrest of eight individuals, including one woman, accused of orchestrating a nationwide cryptocurrency-linked scam worth nearly Rs50 crore.

The operation was launched after police received a tip-off about suspicious activity in Flat No. 501 of Acme Eden Court Society. Investigations revealed that the accused had been posing as representatives of financial institutions, sending fake alerts to people across India regarding unauthorized cryptocurrency transactions linked to their bank accounts.

Victims were tricked into calling a fake helpline, where scammers impersonating officials coerced them into transferring money through e-vouchers, gift cards, or direct bank transfers.

The accused—Abhishek Pandey (Mumbai), Akshay Kumar (J&K), Pradeep Das (Arunachal Pradesh), Mukul Singh (Himachal Pradesh), Shaun Sakeen, Amit Tiwari, Arfeen Sadiq, and Arpita Sarbabidya (all from West Bengal)—were operating from the same flat. Some of them, officials noted, were students.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Rupinderdeep Sohi stated, “Preliminary findings suggest this group worked under a larger syndicate. We believe the mastermind could be based in Punjab.”

Police recovered 12 laptops, 14 mobile phones, and an SUV suspected to be used in the scam. A case has been registered under Sections 318(4) and 61(2) of the BNS and Section 66-D of the IT Act.

Authorities confirmed that more arrests and recoveries are expected as the investigation deepens.
