In a chilling case of betrayal and murder, police on Wednesday arrested Abhishek, a man accused of killing a married woman from Jalaun and dumping her body in a lake in Uttarakhand. He was apprehended near Saatmeel after evading arrest for over a month. A reward of Rs25,000 had been declared for information leading to his capture.

The victim, Pushpa, was reported missing by her husband Rishi Tiwari after she failed to return from a visit to her in-laws in Dakor. On June 9, Uttarakhand police informed him that Pushpa’s body had been recovered from a lake. Rishi also revealed that Pushpa had expressed fear of being attacked by Abhishek during a phone call on June 7, just before her death.

Inspector Ajit Singh, acting on a tip-off, led the operation that led to Abhishek’s arrest. During interrogation, Abhishek confessed to the crime. He revealed that he used to tutor Pushpa’s children, which led to a close relationship with her. Though he initially rejected her proposal to be together, Pushpa continued pursuing him, even asking him to eliminate her husband.

Abhishek said the two had travelled together to Dehradun, Rishikesh, Mussoorie, and finally reached Bhimtal on June 5. On the night of June 6, after checking into a hotel and drinking together, they got into a heated argument. Around 1 a.m., during a walk by the lakeside, Abhishek pushed Pushpa into the lake in a fit of rage and fled the city.

Police are continuing the investigation to corroborate the confession and build the case further.
