Abdul Rahim Sultan Raj was arrested by police in Jangaon district for defrauding multiple victims over the years while running a hospital and falsely claiming to be the heir of Tipu Sultan and the chairman of the Tipu Sultan Memorial Trust. Authorities revealed that Sultan Raj, originally from Kumbham village in Tamil Nadu, had worked in various medical institutions before opening his own K.K. Hospital in Jangaon in 2020.
Sultan Raj allegedly convinced his victims that his political connections, stemming from his supposed royal lineage, would help him secure lucrative government contracts, medical college projects, and job placements in exchange for large payments. In one instance, he collected Rs 14.75 lakh by promising job placements in ESI hospitals. Additionally, he took Rs 5 lakh from local businessman Maraboina Pandu for medical equipment that was never delivered, and Rs 1.7 crore from S.V.N. Chari, a Hyderabad-based auditor.
Further investigations revealed that Sultan Raj also extorted Rs 50 lakh from a person named A. Raju. In total, he is believed to have amassed over Rs 5.56 crore through fraudulent schemes. After evading authorities for several months, Sultan Raj was finally traced to his hospital in Jangaon and arrested following a tip-off.
The investigation, led by Jangaon police inspector P. Damodhar Reddy and his team, is also examining whether Sultan Raj is a qualified doctor or simply a fake medical practitioner who exploited his false identity for financial gain.
