In a swift breakthrough, Kapurthala police arrested six men in connection with the brutal stabbing of Sudanese student Muhamad Wada Bala Yousaf near Phagwara. The suspects were tracked down and apprehended in Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, within hours of the crime.
The arrested include Abdul Ahad, Amar Partap, Yash Vardhan, Aditya Garg, Mohammad Shoaib, and Shashank alias Shaggy. They were remanded to five days of police custody for further interrogation.
The victim and another Sudanese student, Ahmed Muhamad Nour (25), were attacked with sharp-edged weapons outside their paying guest accommodation in Maheru village, Phagwara, on Thursday evening. Wada, aged 24, succumbed to his injuries on the spot, while Ahmed survived and gave vital information to investigators.
An FIR was registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) based on Ahmed’s statement. A large-scale investigation led by SP Rupinder Bhatti involved multiple units including CIA in-charge Bisman Singh and ASI Jasvir Singh.
Two more suspects, Vikas Bawa and Abhay Raj—the latter identified as the prime accused—remain absconding. According to SSP Gaurav Toora, Abhay Raj carried out the fatal stabbing.
Police, aided by Himachal authorities, recovered a Bolero vehicle used in the escape and launched further raids. Efforts are ongoing to capture the remaining two.
“This was a high-profile case involving foreign nationals. We are committed to ensuring justice through a prompt and thorough investigation,” said SSP Toora.
