Kozhikode: Police have arrested Abbas (59), a native of Kasaragod, in connection with the theft of 52 Onam bumper lottery tickets valued at Rs 26,000 from a lottery stall at Koyilandy bus stand.
The theft was reported by N Musthafa, owner of the VK Lotteries stall, after noticing a large bundle of Onam bumper tickets missing on September 14. This was not the first theft at his stall; 25 tickets were stolen on August 22, prompting Musthafa to install CCTV cameras on September 13, just a day before the latest incident.
CCTV footage showed Abbas entering the stall around 6 PM, discreetly removing a bunch of tickets, and leaving with them. Using the footage, police tracked Abbas to Kasaragod and arrested him on Monday night. He was brought to the Koyilandy Police Station on Tuesday and remanded to custody.
In addition to the 52 stolen tickets, police also seized 45 more stolen lottery tickets from Abbas, raising suspicions that he was involved in selling them illegally.
The accused has been booked under sections 332(c) and 305 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
