Chhaygaon Police arrested Upam Das, a central executive member of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), late Friday night in connection with the death of Karabi Kakati at Bankakata under Chhaygaon police station.

According to police sources, Kakati’s family alleged that she died by suicide after facing mental harassment and deception in a personal relationship. The family accused Upam Das of subjecting her to prolonged psychological torture, which they say led her to take the extreme step.

Upam Das and Karabi Kakati were legally married in 2016. However, in recent months, Kakati reportedly experienced continuous mental harassment, according to her family.

Upam Das was arrested from his aunt’s residence in Sikharhati, under the Palasbari Legislative Assembly Constituency (LAC), following the filing of serious allegations against him.

In response to the charges, the All Assam Students’ Union expelled Upam Das with immediate effect. Police have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.
