Lucknow Police have recovered a stolen Zuljanah (Duldul) horse, of religious significance to the Shia community, after a five-day investigation involving nearly two dozen CCTV cameras.

The horse, which plays a central role in Muharram processions from Karbala, Lucknow, went missing on December 24, prompting concern among the local community.

Talkatora SHO Kuldeep Dubey told PTI that the investigation was challenging due to limited initial leads. Police scanned CCTV footage around the Karbala area, which revealed an unidentified man leading the horse away. Further inquiry led to the arrest of Chhotu (25), who was produced in court and remanded to 14 days of judicial custody.

During questioning, Chhotu initially denied involvement but later confessed. He had previously worked at the Karbala stable for about a year and a half, giving him knowledge of the horse’s importance. His motive was financial, as he intended to sell the horse.

The theft was reportedly carried out with the help of his brother-in-law, Firoz, who remains absconding. Police said the horse was sold for around Rs1.75 lakh to a stable owner in Unnao, who was unaware of its religious significance or that it had been stolen.

Based on Chhotu’s disclosure, the horse was safely recovered from Unnao and returned to Karbala. The FIR was lodged by Syed Faizi, a resident of Karbala, emphasizing that the theft affected the religious sentiments of the Shia community.

Police continue to investigate and are working to apprehend the absconding accomplice.
