Kolkata Police Bust Interstate Vehicle Theft Racket

Stolen Mahindra Scorpio recovered, 4 accused arrested

by Ananya Mehta

In a major breakthrough, Kolkata Police have busted an interstate vehicle theft racket and recovered a stolen Mahindra Scorpio that was reported missing earlier this month.

The case began on June 2, 2025, when Rajesh Singh, a resident of Tagore Road, Haridevpur, filed a complaint after losing contact with Mohit Kumar, a driver hired through the Work India app on May 29 to drive his brand-new vehicle (Reg. No. WB10F4934). Singh tracked the Scorpio’s last GPS location to Asansol, prompting immediate police action.

Investigations revealed that Mohit Kumar was using a fake identity and was linked to a gang involved in vehicle thefts across multiple states. Special police teams conducted raids in Asansol, Jamshedpur, and nearby areas, supported by technical monitoring. Mohit Kumar was arrested from Golmuri, Jamshedpur on June 11.

His interrogation led to the arrest of the gang’s mastermind, Tushar Dutta (alias Bumba), from Baruipur on June 16. Bumba confessed that the stolen Scorpio had been sold to Avinash Singh, a car dealer from Shri Ji Motors, CIT Road, Kolkata, who was arrested the next day. Avinash admitted to reselling the vehicle to Raghuveer Kumar (27) from Samastipur, Bihar.

Acting on intelligence and railway surveillance, Raghuveer was apprehended on June 21 from the Raxaul Weekly Express at Barauni station. Investigators found that the Scorpio’s original chassis and registration numbers had been tampered with to match a wrecked vehicle.

A subsequent raid at Mahi Automobiles, Sitamarhi, near the Nepal border, led to the recovery of the stolen Scorpio, now carrying a fake Bihar registration (BR-01 JD 7332), in Raghuveer’s presence.

Preliminary findings confirm the gang’s involvement in a pan-India vehicle theft racket, with cases pending in Delhi, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, and other states. All arrested individuals are currently in police custody, and authorities continue to investigate to recover additional stolen vehicles and apprehend remaining gang members.
