In a major anti-drug operation ahead of Christmas, Dima Hasao police seized brown sugar worth approximately Rs 1 crore and arrested two alleged traffickers at Harangajao along NH-27 on Thursday.
Acting on specific intelligence, police intercepted a vehicle traveling from Silchar to Haflong. A thorough search uncovered 527.44 grams of brown sugar concealed inside the vehicle.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Zaidul Islam (30) from Nijbarala, Barpeta district, and Ansarul Islam (22) from Furhaniyat, Nagaon district. Authorities also seized three mobile phones and the vehicle’s registration documents during the operation.
Dima Hasao Additional SP (Crime) Faruk Ahmed stated, “We are interrogating the accused separately to trace the source of the contraband and identify the intended recipients.”
Preliminary investigations suggest the consignment was being transported from Aizawl to Lumding via Silchar, highlighting the increasing use of both rail and highway routes for narcotics trafficking in the region. Officials described the seizure as one of the largest drug hauls in the district in recent years, emphasizing intensified surveillance and enforcement along key transit corridors to curb drug trafficking.
