A second arrest has been made in the high-value gold robbery case in Kolkata, with the police detaining Masumbabu Mallick from Karnataka. Mallick, a resident of Hooghly district in West Bengal, had fled the state after the robbery in the Sinthee area on the northern outskirts of Kolkata.
His arrest follows the earlier detention of Saidul Mondal, who was accused of looting nearly Rs3 crore worth of gold from local gold merchant Sanjit Kumar Das in October. According to investigators, Mondal’s interrogation led to Mallick’s identification and subsequent arrest.
Police sources revealed that Saidul and Masum jointly planned the robbery, though more individuals are believed to be involved. Investigators are also probing whether the duo committed similar heists together in the past.
Despite two arrests, police have yet to recover the entire stolen gold. Mallick is being brought back to West Bengal on transit remand for further questioning.
The incident occurred when gold trader Sanjit Das was returning home from a market with over 2 kilograms of gold. As he reached his workshop in Sinthee, bike-borne assailants blocked his path and robbed him at gunpoint before fleeing.
The investigation into the interstate robbery network continues, officials said.
