The Vanrai Police have arrested a gang of burglars who used stolen autorickshaws as getaway vehicles during a series of night-time thefts and break-ins across Mumbai. With their arrest, police said they have solved five criminal cases.
The breakthrough came after iron rods weighing 130 kg were stolen from a shop in Goregaon East on the night between November 18 and 19. Following the FIR, investigators examined CCTV footage and discovered that a group of burglars had been moving through various neighbourhoods in autorickshaws, targeting both commercial and residential properties.
Based on surveillance and intelligence inputs, police laid a trap in Bandra East and arrested the accused — Sachin Gavas (43), Yogesh Rathod (19), and Taufiq Khan (43). According to officers, all three have previous criminal records, including cases registered at Andheri, Goregaon, and Borivli police stations for theft of autorickshaws.
The arrests have helped crack multiple cases involving break-ins committed using stolen autos as both transport and escape vehicles.
