Two Women Arrested for Rs 85 Lakh Jewellery Theft

Domestic staffers caught after fleeing to West Bengal

by Ananya Mehta

Noida police have arrested two women who allegedly stole jewellery worth Rs 85 lakh and nearly Rs 3 lakh in cash from households where they were employed as domestic staffers. The women, who referred to themselves as ‘devarani’ and ‘jethani’, fled to West Bengal after the thefts but were brought back to Noida on a three-day transit remand following their arrest in East Midnapore district on Wednesday.

The arrests followed two reported thefts earlier this month from Sector 12’s P-block and Sector 49’s Barola village, where the domestic staff allegedly stole valuables within a week of being hired. The similar pattern prompted a coordinated investigation by teams from Sector 24 and Sector 49 police stations.

DCP Noida Yamuna Prasad said that nearly 300 CCTV cameras were scanned, revealing two women of similar appearance. Technical surveillance and local intelligence confirmed that the suspects had escaped to their hometown in West Bengal. Police teams were dispatched to Midnapore, where both women were arrested and the stolen jewellery and cash were recovered.

The accused have been identified as:

Mamuni Jana alias Moni (31) – committed the theft in Sector 24

Asha alias Mamoni (30) – executed the burglary in Sector 49

Investigations revealed that the women’s husbands are brothers, one working as an auto driver and the other in a blood bank. The women had been living in Noida for five years, frequently moving across sectors posing as domestic workers. They would gain the trust of households, locate valuables, and steal jewellery and cash before fleeing to East Medinipur.

Police said the women would melt stolen jewellery and sell it, fabricating stories of financial distress. During interrogation, Mamuni admitted to stealing jewellery from Sector 12 and selling a portion for Rs 3 lakh, which she spent. Asha confessed to the Sector 49 theft. Authorities are now investigating whether their husbands were involved.

ACP Twinkle Jain noted that the households had failed to verify their domestic staff before employment, which allowed the thefts to occur.
