Police in Malpe have arrested four individuals for their involvement in a shocking case where a woman was tied to a tree and brutally beaten over allegations of stealing fish. The incident gained attention after a video of the assault went viral on social media.
According to authorities, the woman — a native of Vijayapura district — was accused of stealing fish from boats at Malpe port. She initially denied the accusation but later confessed when questioned at the Malpe police station.
The disturbing video shows the woman tied to a tree as another person strikes her while onlookers stand by. Instead of intervening, some bystanders were seen laughing, which has further angered the public.
Udupi District Police Superintendent Dr. Arun K confirmed the arrest of Lakshmibai, Sunder, Shilpa, and another individual in connection with the incident. “We have registered a case based on the woman’s complaint,” he stated, adding that the case was filed under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Atrocities Act.
Udupi Deputy Commissioner Dr. Vidyakumari condemned the assault, calling it “unacceptable and inhumane.” She added, “It’s wrong to treat someone this way, even if they made a mistake.”
The case remains under investigation as police continue questioning the suspects and reviewing video evidence.
