In a sensational case in Varthur, Bengaluru, police have arrested three individuals—Divas Kami, Aarohan Thapa, and Asmita—for allegedly stealing iPhones worth Rs 30 lakh to fund a lavish lifestyle and impress a girlfriend.
According to authorities, Asmita had separated from her husband six months ago and was living with her boyfriend, Divas, in Varthur. Seeking quick money, the couple, along with Divas’s friend Aarohan, devised a plan to target high-end mobile showrooms.
The gang broke into two showrooms of the same company within 24 hours, smashing shutters and looting expensive iPhone 17 handsets. They reportedly escaped through emergency exits to avoid CCTV detection. Police said Asmita managed the sale of the stolen devices through social media and personal contacts.
Following complaints from showroom owners, Varthur police launched an investigation using surveillance footage and mobile tracking. The operation led to the arrest of the trio and the recovery of over 25 iPhones and a luxury watch, all valued at approximately Rs30 lakh.
Divas and Aarohan, both natives of Nepal, had been working in Bengaluru but turned to theft after losing jobs due to the economic slowdown. Authorities are probing possible links to other similar thefts in the city.
The accused have been booked under sections related to theft and criminal conspiracy under the Indian Penal Code. Police Commissioner B. Dayananda commended the Varthur police for quickly solving the case.
Investigations continue to identify buyers of the stolen iPhones and determine if a larger network was involved. Citizens and retailers have been urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity immediately.
