MONTGOMERY, Ala. — J’Kwon Tyshi Williams, 21, from Selma, Alabama, was sentenced to two and a half years in federal prison for destroying a U.S. Postal Service (USPS) collection box and possessing stolen mail. Following his prison term, Williams will serve an additional two years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay a $5,000 fine and $1,180 in restitution.

The incident occurred in the early hours of November 9, 2023, when the Millbrook Police Department responded to reports of individuals attempting to break into a USPS blue collection box outside the Millbrook Post Office. Witnesses saw a car parked in front of the box with its hood raised and several people gathered around. When police approached, the group fled in the vehicle.

Williams, the driver, led officers on a high-speed chase from Elmore County to Dallas County, at times exceeding speeds of 120 miles per hour and swerving into oncoming traffic. The chase ended when Williams crashed into a light pole. He and his passengers fled on foot.

Inside the vehicle, officers found burglary tools including a reciprocating saw, tire iron, and pliers, as well as Williams’ wallet, stolen checks, other stolen mail, check-writing paper, a handgun ammunition magazine, ammunition, and multiple ATM deposit receipts.

Although the burglars did not successfully break into the Millbrook mailbox, inspectors deemed the damage severe enough to require replacement, costing $1,180 to ensure mail security.

Williams pleaded guilty on June 5 to unlawful possession of stolen mail and destruction of a letterbox.
