Surat police have arrested Shahrukhuddin Meer, a man accused of stealing gold jewellery worth Rs 3.81 crore from Bera Jewels in Ahmedabad, where he was employed as a security guard. The theft was reported on Sunday at the Kalupur store, and authorities promptly alerted police stations statewide.
Meer was caught by Saroli police officials during a routine patrol after receiving a tip-off about a suspicious man near Sarthi Hotel in Kumbhariya. During interrogation, Meer admitted to stealing 1.41 kilograms of gold jewellery in the early hours of Sunday and revealed his plan to sell the items in Mumbai through his contacts. He hails from Hooghly in West Bengal.
CCTV footage showed Meer stealing the store keys from a drawer and opening the safe between 2 AM and 3 AM on Monday. He took gold pendants, bangles, bracelets, rings, gemstones, and silver articles, placed them in a bag, and fled the scene. The store owner’s complaint stated that Meer had been employed as a security guard for just two weeks before the theft.
Meer will be handed over to Kalupur police after completing legal formalities in Surat.
